HJ Heavy Industries was established in 1937 as Korea’s first steel shipyard and has since played a leading role in the development of the nation’s shipbuilding industry.

 

In 1974, the company was designated as the first defense contractor in the naval ship sector, and has since contributed to building key naval and coast guard assets for Korea.

 

With extensive experience in both commercial and naval shipbuilding, HJ Heavy Industries has delivered a wide range of vessels, including patrol boats, high-speed crafts, and support ships. The company possesses full lifecycle capabilities covering design, construction, testing, and MRO services. Recently, it has expanded into future maritime defense areas such as smart ship technologies, unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), and manned-unmanned teaming systems.

 

2. What is your company's main theme for KOREA OCEAN EXPO, and which core capabilities or technologies would you like to highlight the most?

At KOREA OCEAN EXPO 2026, We will showcase our proven expertise in constructing Korea Coast Guard patrol vessels ranging from 500 to 3,000 tons, highlighting our extensive track record and optimized design capabilities for various maritime operational environments. Our experience in medium- to large-sized patrol vessels ensures both operational stability and mission effectiveness.

In addition, we will introduce our differentiated capabilities, including:

Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV / Hovercraft) design and construction, Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) development and operation, Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) concepts for maritime operations

Through these technologies, HJ Heavy Industries aims to demonstrate its capability as a next-generation maritime solution provider integrating manned and unmanned platforms.

3. Please introduce your products used by the Korea Coast Guard or government agencies, or those under development or intended for supply.

HJ Heavy Industries has an extensive track record of delivering naval and special-purpose vessels to the Republic of Korea Navy and Coast Guard.

In the naval sector, the company has built and delivered key assets, including:

Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH), Landing Ship Tank (LST-II), Landing Ship Fast (LSF-II), Patrol Killer Guided Missile / Medium Rocket (PKG/PKMR), Various naval auxiliary vessels.

For the Korea Coast Guard, HJHI has supplied a range of patrol vessels (500–3,000 tons), contributing to maritime security and search-and-rescue missions.

In addition, the company has constructed research vessels, training ships, and other special-purpose vessels, demonstrating strong capabilities in high-reliability shipbuilding.

In particular, as of 2026, HJHI is expected to participate in:

PKMR (Patrol Killer Medium Rocket), High-Speed Combat Craft, Coast Guard patrol vessel,Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) development projects

Through these initiatives, the company aims to strengthen its capabilities in next-generation maritime defense systems, including manned-unmanned integrated operations.
